WAS I EVER HERE
Way back in ’08, I created this musical motif for a series of theatre
pieces about what happens between two people in a budget hotel
room. It reminded me of the cigarette burns on the carpet of a cheap
motel I once stayed in. I can still smell it now. That feeling of
haunting transience had me repeating these two melodies over the
same four chords, like a music box. Long after the plays were over,
still feeling that indescribable ache, I laid them on top of each other
and got this.
Walking backwards through the crack
Light of darkness on my back
Footprints etched in carpet stains
Was I ever here? Will I be back again?
There’s a hole behind my face
A scar that I can never trace
My senses numb except to pain
Was I ever here? Will I be back again?
Was I ever here?.........
Will I be back again?
Was I ever here?.........
Will no one ever know?
Will I ever dare?
To come back here again?
Walking backwards thru the crack
It grows so quickly, but stains forever
It makes a sound like nothing heard
Blinded by silence, you swear that you’ll never
Look into the light of a deafening word
Mmmmm Mmmm…
Mmmm….
Was I ever here?......... Will I be back again?
It grows so quickly, but stays forever
Was I ever here?......... Will no one ever know?
It makes a sound like nothing heard
Will I ever dare? To come back here again?
Blinded by silence, you swear that you’ll never
Look into the light of a deafening word
Was I ever here?.........
Will I be back again?
Was I ever here?.........
Will no one ever know?
Will I ever dare?
To come back here again?
Walking backwards thru the crack
Was I ever here?.........
Was I ever here?.........
Will I be back again?
